What are these libraries about...

Hi!
Sorry for this not smart question , but...
A lot of Linux programms I want to install often "say" that they need "lib*.so.3".
What are these libraries about and where I can download them?

I usually search in google, if Ive got some missing libs, but check, whether you have apt-get (or a similar tool, like "emerge" in gentoo linux).
If youve git it, install your program using it and apt-get will handle the rest (downloading libraries, etc.). Of course, it doesnt work always, in such a case, try the google method as a last resort.
